The medical mission that was launched on November 27, 2003 at Kwali
Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja was aimed at
expressing the love of Christ to the under-privileged in the society
by providing them with good medical care at no cost. The mission was
held from November 27-29, 2003.
The clinic site was the Kwali Council Health Center, an equivalent
of a Comprehensive Health Care Center with modern medical facilities
where hundreds of people who have yearned for medical treatment for
too long converged to receive free medical care.
During the mission, people attended the clinic to receive treatment
for various ailments that hitherto would not have been possible because
of the expensive nature of medical services. Some of the ailments were
life threatening.
A team of nine medical doctors, two pharmacists, four nurses and four
laboratory scientists worked side by side with 20 other non-medical
volunteers drawn from different churches who were involved in praying
and counseling with the patients after they collected their medicine
from the pharmacy.
38 surgeries were performed. Among those who benefited from the surgery
was a 35-year-old Muslim woman (Adama Saleh) who has been without children
after 20 years of marriage due to a fibroid tumor. For over two years
she struggled to raise the money for the surgery but to no avail. During
the medical mission she was successfully operated upon and the fibroid
tumor removed. Our prayer is that this successful surgery will eventually
see her having her own babies.
A total of 1,433 people benefited from the free medical care. Out of
this number, 18 people surrendered their lives to Christ. 16 people
were baptized in the Holy Spirit, and 102 people rededicated their lives
to Christ.
The Chairman of Kwali Area Council Samaila Gomna, who played host to
the Medical Mission said: "The majority of our people who have
health problems cannot afford to go to the hospital for treatment because
of the expensive nature of medical services. What you have done today
could be better described in the light of the Scripture that says one
who gives to the poor lends to the Lord, and your reward is guaranteed
from the Lord."
One of the patients, Terah Dadin Kwali, when interviewed said: 'Your
drugs are very powerful because they bring immediate relief to long-term
ailments."
In the counseling section, a volunteer counselor expressed his joy at
leading an elderly man of 70 years to Christ, which the volunteer described
as "a blessing beyond comparison".
Doctor Asemota, who was partnering with us for the first time, said:
"This experience is worth repeating again, and I wish to continue
to be a part of this laudable project that touches the lives of the
under-privileged in our society."
Pharmacist Ayuba Bivan, seeing the quality of drugs at hand, admitted
that they are the best in the market.
