Washing hands at the well
|
A well in a remote village in Nigeria has brought people of different faiths together. Kaiyeye village is about an 11 hour journey by road from Abuja. This is a Kambari community whose religion is Islam and traditional religion. Their main occupation is farming. Kaiyeye has a population of 1,500 people. Of this population only 1-2 percent is Christian.
Kaiyeye Well was commissioned on March 31, 2004. The Living Water Well drew everyone in the community. The Fulani Muslims who came to witness the commissioning were amazed at the well. They kept asking whether they will be allowed to drink from the bore well too. When they were told that they can come and fetch water freely like any other person, they were excited. They were full of thanks for the well.

The well was commissioned by John Kalma, Operation Blessing Manager, Nigeria. He prayed over the well and dedicated it to the glory and honor of God.
The chief of the village, Mallam Peshe Mashawuri, in his speech said, "What you people have done in this village I will never forget. You have come to this bush to help us. God will reward you."
One old woman (about 60 years) said, "I have been drinking dirty water all my life, but today my children and grand-children will enjoy clean water. Thank you."

Right there at the well site after the commissioning ceremony, a hygiene lecture was organized. About 60 people benefited from the lecture. They were taught about maintenance of the well and also how to take care of their drinking water at home.
An outreach was organized two days after the commissioning and 37 people prayed to receive Christ as Savior.
