Hillbrow is the crime
capital of Johannesburg, South Africa. People kill for something as simple
as a cell phone.
"We're
dealing with hundreds of drug dealers," said J.P. Sharnig who works
with CBN Africa. "There are so many people into prostitution. And
the drugs have taken the city by storm."
High school students from Soweto are filled with fear because AIDS
is taking over their township.
"The
cemeteries are kept busy," said Terry Meeuwsen, 700 Club co-host.
"They bury more than 400 people every week from AIDS. There's probably
never been a more significant time in the history of this country when
the people here need to hear the Good News of the love of Jesus Christ."
That's why CBN has come onto the scene in South Africa -- to bring
hope through a video ministry. CBN's WorldReach Director for South Africa
Keith Strugnell has set up nine video ministry centers in his region.
Each center presents CBN programming to audiences in need.
"They
go out to schools. They go into the churches, and sometimes just in
a street ministry where they will set it up somewhere and show videos,
Christian videos, to people," said Strugnell.
"We've had a phenomenal response," said Sharnig. "Since
I've started it, there's been so many people that have given their lives
to Jesus Christ that have walked in just out of the blue."
Sharnig runs a video ministry center at a mission in Hillbrow where
he provides physical and spiritual nourishment for people like Molefi.
Molefi's
parents died in a car accident and his brother committed suicide. For
a long time, Molefi looked for fulfillment in alcohol and gold trafficking.
Today Molefi is a Christian, and it's CBN testimonies that have encouraged
his heart and helped him stay clean.
"It gave me courage to differentiate wrong and temptations from
the right things that come from God and the right blessings that come
from God," said Molefi.
Like
Molefi, Ephraim was also involved with the wrong crowd. But thanks to
CBN's video ministry, his life has turned around.
"They were showing us this video The Turning Point," said
Ephraim, "and I thought if the Lord God can change the life of
that man, I can change my life too."
"God is using the video ministry in Hillbrow and in Soweto,"
said Meeuwsen. "When I visited this township, I witnessed CBN efforts
in action at a local school. We showed students two testimonies and
then gave an invitation to receive Christ.
"Nearly
100 kids responded to this salvation message!" said Meeuwsen.
Jesus came to heal the broken-hearted and set the captives free. He
told us to preach the gospel to all the nations. If you're looking for
a way to do this, become a CBN partner today and help us to continue
producing programs about Jesus Christ that will change lives.
"Molefi, what would have happened to you if you never would have
heard about Jesus or seen the video you saw?" asked Meeuwsen.
" I think I would probably be in jail or dead had it not been
for that video that I watched," said Molefi.
"Now I'm safe in the hands of Jesus," said Ephraim.
